6 Shoulders are Shahid during operation SINDOOR

The controversy surrounding Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the casualties of **Operation Sindoor** stems from a contradiction between a statement he made in Parliament in 2025 and the official release of casualty records a year later.
Here is a breakdown of the situation and the arguments from both the Opposition and the Government:

## The Official Casualties
In late June 2026, the Indian government officially released the names of six military personnel—five from the Indian Army and one from the Indian Air Force—who were killed in action during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. Their names were formally inscribed on the National War Memorial and added to its Roll of Honour.

## The Opposition's Accusation
Following the release of the martyrs' names, opposition parties (primarily the Congress) accused the Defence Minister of lying and misleading Parliament.

They cited a speech he gave in the Lok Sabha in July 2025, shortly after the operation concluded. During that address, he stated:

*"If you want to raise a question, then ask whether any of our brave soldiers were harmed in this operation. The answer is, no, none of our soldiers were harmed."*

Because the government officially acknowledged the six deaths 13 months later, the opposition argued that the Defence Minister deliberately concealed the fatalities to protect the government's image. They have demanded his resignation and moved a privilege motion against him in the Lok Sabha.

## The Government's Explanation
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) completely rejected the claim that the Defence Minister lied, stating that the opposition selectively quoted an isolated portion of a 55-minute speech and deliberately stripped it of its context.
According to the MoD's clarification:

 * **Addressing Fake News:**
At the time of his speech in July 2025, there was a persistent and widespread false narrative circulating on social media claiming that **Indian Air Force pilots** had been killed during the cross-border airstrikes.

 * **Specific Context:** The government argued that his remarks were specifically intended to debunk that exact rumor about the pilots. They maintain it was a targeted response to false propaganda, rather than a statement claiming that zero casualties occurred across the entirety of the multi-day military operation.

**In summary:** The opposition believes the Defence Minister lied to Parliament by flatly claiming no soldiers were harmed, while the government maintains he was specifically addressing false rumors about downed pilots, and his words are being taken out of context for political gain.
